Attahiru Jega

Professor Attahiru Muhammadu Jega is a Nigerian academia, a former president of Academy Staff Union of University (ASUU), former Vice-Chancellor of Bayero University, a Professor and former Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Jega was born on 11th January 1957 in Jega town, Kebbi State, Nigeria.

He attends Sabon Gari Town Primary School in Jega (1963 – 1969).

Proceeded to Government Secondary School, Birnin Kebbi, then Ahmadu Bello University College, Kano State in 1974.

Jega graduated with a Second Class Upper Division B.Sc degree in Political Science (1979).

He worked briefly as an assistant lecturer at the Bayero University.

Attahiru earned his PhD in Political Science at Northwestern University Evanston, Illinois, United States (1981 – 1984).

Professor Jega is a former President of the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU). As ASUU president he was closely associated with Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Some of Jega other appointment includes:

A visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, Lagos (March 1992 – March 1993).

He was a visiting Research Fellow, Department of Political Science, University of Stockholm, Sweden (1994).

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Bayero University (1995 – 1996).

Director, Center for Democratic Research and Training, Bayero University (2000 – 2004).

He was the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University (2005).

Jega was the 4th Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (8th June 2010 – 31st June 2015) and more.

Professor Jega is widely seen as an astute intellectual with strong sense of ethics and morality.
