One of the longest transfer sagas of 2018 has come to a conclusion, with Antoine Griezmann announcing that he will stay at Atletico Madrid.
The Frenchman had remained vague on the subject of his future for some time, but on Thursday evening a documentary was broadcast which showed him mulling over the decision over the past few months, concluding with the announcement that he would be remaining at the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano.
“I have decided to stay,” he stated, at the end of ‘The Decision’, a programme shown on Movistar+, one similar to that of LeBron James when he announced he’d join the Miami Heat in 2010.
A contract renewal until 2023 is now expected, although Atletico Madrid are not allowing this broadcast to alter their original plans.
No official announcement will, therefore, be made by the club until the paperwork is signed by both parties.
In the Atleti offices, the decision to pledge his future to the club now has been understood, as directors realise that France coach Didier Deschamps wanted all of his players focussed for the World Cup.
